An encounter, a book, the river Ticino, the city of the three castles… A young maiden. Dago has reached the South of Switzerland, Ticino. And, already someone in Bellinzona wants him dead.
With this article, I am starting a new section of the blog where I will share with you about italian Fumetti (meaning comics). For this first article I’ve chosen a topic near me, actual near me. But first, I should tell you that I live in the South of Switzerland and I speak italian, which is one of our four national languages. So, since I am pretty close to Italy and I can enjoy a lot of these italian comics I will be happy to share some with you in future posts.
Who is Dago?
Dago or Cesare Renzi is a noble from Venice, who’s family was slaughtered by rival families. Cesare is rescued by pirates and sold to the Turks, who gave him the name “Dago”. He’s always had to endure hardship and pain, always on the brink of death. But, always escaping with a strong thirst for vengeance.
By the time he got his freedom back he had wandered half the world and become trusted by many, from kings to artists, from monks to popes, from dukes and duchess to squires and maids. In short he had seen it all.
Dago on Helvetic (Swiss) territory
And, one of his stories brought him straight through the little patch of land that was then called Confederatio Helvetica (Switzerland tout cour, by the way this is why we have “CH” on our car plates). Fun thing is that one of the comic book of the Swiss saga, which includes a total of six books, is actually set where I live, in Bellinzona the city with the three castles.

A less known fact…
Now, here is a bit of a curiosity. Dago’s stories are set in the first half of the sixteenth century and South of Switzerland. But, the italian speaking part of the country, South of the Alps was not yet part of Swiss confederation. The region of Ticino entered the confederation in 1803 by decree of Napoleon Bonaparte. So, technically Dago was not in Switzerland during the first three books that saw him in Ticino, passing the cities of Lugano, Locarno and Bellinzona.
